description

Our fifth title on the Land Speed Record and Cobb's 1947 record of 394 mph still stood in 1963. It was soon to be broken by Donald Campbell in the wheel-driven Proteus Bluebird.

Then entered Goldenrod with its four Chrysler petrol engines, Blue Flame which was rocket-powered and the jet-powered contenders - Spirit of America, Green Monster and, finally, Andrew Green in Thrust SSC, which saw the record standing at 763 mph at the end of the century.
