Then entered Goldenrod with its four Chrysler petrol engines, Blue Flame which was rocket-powered and the jet-powered contenders - Spirit of America, Green Monster and, finally, Andrew Green in Thrust SSC, which saw the record standing at 763 mph at the end of the century.
